Importance of Vitamins & Minerals

The study of vitamins and minerals has been on for a fair amount of time now and a lot is known about the roles of each in a body. We also know a lot about what happens if too much or too little of any one is ingested. Research is an ongoing process to learn as much as posible about the effects of these vitamins and minerals on the physiological functioning of the body. The Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences are constantly reviewing the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA).

All vitamins can be obtained directly from food with the exception of vitamins D, B5 and B7 which are obtained in part from different sources. B5 or Pantothenic acid can be absorbed by the body from a ten minute stint in the midday sun which will give an adult half of the …

Liquid Nutritional Supplements

Why have nutritional supplements become such an essential part of one’s lifestyle? This is primarily because people have no time to prepare food the way they used to. In fact, with synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, pollution and other negatives, food loses its nutrients before reaching our households. And then the cooking methods leave the vegetables and other foodstuffs with minimal nutrients. So today, human beings are not eating healthy the natural way. The result is the need to consume nutritional supplements.

Liquid nutritional supplements refer to nutrients that are in liquid form. They can be drank as syrups, which are generally given to children and senior citizens, as well as patients on a liquid diet. There are milk nutritional supplements, which are flavored and contain the required nutrients, especially proteins. Then there are the fruit juices with additional nutrients put into them.

Healthcare professionals generally recommend liquid nutritional supplements, as …

Bilberry is found mostly in dark skinned fruits. It is used to treat diarrhea, vericose veins, and mucous membrane inflammation. The herb is beneficial in the treatment of hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) and in eye health.

When Body Lacks Vitamins

For instance, people who do not have enough of the vitamins A, B1 and B2 suffer from recurring tiredness, mental or emotional disturbances, loss of appetite and chapped lips, among others.

The common causes of these vitamin deficiencies include poor eating habits, alcoholism, emotional stress, the improper absorption of vitamins and minerals (usually due to liver or intestinal disorders), the intake of medicines that interfere with the ingestion of vitamins and lack of exposure to sunlight.

If you constantly feel sluggish and suffer from chronic health-related inconveniences, you might be short of the vitamins your body needs to function properly. Doctors will usually prescribe supplements that address the lack of vitamins and minerals in the body. However, also keep in mind not to overdo it, as an excess of vitamins can also be harmful.

Do you still need to take vitamins even if you maintain a healthy diet? The answer …

Prenatal Vitamins

In general most people do not take in the recommended amount of vitamins and minerals required by the body for optimum function.

When pregnant, a mother is going to need even more of these vitamins and minerals to cope with the extra demand from the baby to keep both of them healthy.

Vitamin supplements are a good, easy way to increase your intake. It is important, however, to realize that they are a supplement and should never be used in place of a balanced diet. Vitamins are absorbed easiest by the body when taken from natural food such as fruit and vegetables. The right amounts are not always possible and that is when supplements come into play.

Prenatal vitamins are different to normal multi-vitamins; they are designed to meet the needs of pregnant women so contain a slightly different mix of ingredients, including the 3 most important ones.

Hoodia Gordonii

One side effect associated with appetite suppressants which contain stimulants is increased heart rate. No studies of hoodia gordonii side effects list increased heart rate. In animal studies, no increased heart rate was noted. Phytopharm, the British pharmaceutical company which is licensed to develop the active molecule in hoodia gordonii, published the results of one clinical study and noted that there was no increase in heart rate among participants. Phytopharm recently announced that phase one of a five phase research project has been completed. Generally companies do not proceed with research if dangerous side effects are noted, but in some cases pharmaceutical companies develop drugs which are known to pose health risks and complicate existing health problems. There may be unknown side effects of hoodia gordonii. Phytopharm is not publishing research reports.

Informal studies of hoodia gordonii side effects performed by supplement companies and in some cases by independent practitioners …

Salvia Divinorum

Salvia Divinorum is legal. I won’t say completely legal, because it probably isn’t something you would want to smoke in the car while driving around. Salvia is legal in that gray area that makes glass pipes somewhat legal. It can also usually be found in the same places that sell glass pipes and hookahs and bongs. If you have Salvia Divinorum on you, you will probably be arrested, but would get off when it came to court. My point is, be careful when you have this on you and treat it like a controlled substance.

How You Ingest Salvia Divinorum:

There are two ways that I know of to ingest Salvia Divinorum. I have tried them both. They are…

  1. Drink a Salvia Divinorum Extract. With this method, you actually take what would be considered a tincher of Salvia. This is a highly concentrated and very alcoholic dose of the Salvia

Magnesium Sulfate

Magnesium sulfate is an extremely versatile drug and has a variety of therapeutic uses. Magnesium sulfate taken orally can act as a laxative. When taken intravenously or intramuscularly, it can reduce the convulsions during labor and even halt premature labor. It can also be applied locally in the form of creams to treat inflammation of the skin and conditions such as ingrown nails.

Magnesium sulfate is used as a cure for a certain case of pregnancy-induced high blood pressure in women called preclampsia. It can also be administered when the condition of preclampsia aggravates and becomes the more chronic condition of eclampsia. Magnesium sulfate is administered intravenously to such patients. It can reduce the convulsions during eclampsia.

Excess dosage of magnesium sulfate can cause nausea, dizziness, severe constipation and vomiting along with muscle weakness and lethargy. It can also pass through the placenta and enter the bloodstream of the infant. …

Types of Vitamins

Vitamins A, D, E and K are fat-soluble vitamins. They are found in foods that contain fats and oils. For example Vitamin A can be obtained by eating fat-containing dairy products and liver. Limited amounts of Vitamin D are provided by consumption of dairy products and egg yolks. Vegetable oils contain Vitamin E. Fat soluble fats are absorbed in the intestine and stored in the body.

The water-soluble vitamins, Vitamin B and Vitamin C, cannot be stored by the body. The water-soluble vitamins are absorbed directly into the blood stream. During one 24-hour period, if a person consumes more Vitamin B or more Vitamin C than he or she needs, that person has no way to store the unused vitamins. Those excess vitamins are lost in the sweat or the urine. Water-soluble vitamins must be included in the daily diet, so that used and lost vitamins can be replaced every …

Multiple Vitamins

Although, the view of many dietitians today is that you should look past just the basic multivitamin supplements and mineral supplements if you are truly serious about the health of you and your loved ones. In fact many researchers say you should be looking at the multinutrient supplements called nutraceuticals.

We should now look closer at why so many people are now looking at more than just the rating of multiple vitamins.

I would like to start off by saying that vitamins and minerals are very important to your health. With that being said, I would now like to tell you that there is much research being done on other nutrients that show a positive effect on the body when it comes to optimum health.

As you all know there are lots of vitamins that have many antioxidants which are great for the body.

Substances in the body that can …
